IBPS PO 2026: how the syllabus splits across two written stages
Selection runs through a Preliminary exam, a Main exam, and an Interview. The two written stages carry different syllabi, and our coverage is organised course-by-course along exactly that split:

IBPS PO Prelims syllabus: three sections decoded
Prelims is a speed exam across three sections. Each one rewards drilled fundamentals over cleverness.
English Language
The working areas: reading comprehension, cloze tests, error spotting, sentence improvement, para jumbles, and fillers. Vocabulary and grammar are tested through usage, not definitions, so daily reading plus targeted grammar drills beat memorised word lists.
Quantitative Aptitude
The core: simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic comparisons, arithmetic word problems (percentages, ratio, profit and loss, time and work, time-speed-distance, interest), and basic data interpretation sets. At Prelims level the DI stays light; the heavy interpretation work is saved for Mains.
Reasoning Ability
Puzzles and seating arrangements dominate, supported by syllogisms, inequalities, blood relations, direction sense, coding-decoding, and alphanumeric series. Puzzle-set practice under a timer is the single highest-return habit in this section.
IBPS PO Mains syllabus: five sections, a different exam

Reasoning & Computer Aptitude
Prelims reasoning returns at higher difficulty, with longer multi-variable puzzles, input-output, logical reasoning, and data sufficiency, and computer aptitude questions ride along in the same section. The computer portion is basic (hardware, software, memory, networks, MS Office level concepts) but it is unfamiliar territory if you never open it.
Data Analysis & Interpretation
This is Quantitative Aptitude grown up. Arithmetic still matters, but the section centres on dense DI: tables, charts, caselets, and missing-data sets, plus data sufficiency and quantity comparisons. Calculation speed from Prelims helps; interpretation stamina is the new skill to build.
English Language, plus the Descriptive paper
Objective English continues with heavier reading comprehension and vocabulary-in-context. What appears fresh is Descriptive English: essay and letter writing, typed under time pressure. It needs structure practice, opening-body-close discipline, and feedback on real attempts, not last-week improvisation.
General / Economy / Banking Awareness
The section with no Prelims ancestor at all. It covers current affairs, the economy, and banking-specific awareness (RBI functions, monetary policy instruments, financial institutions, schemes, and banking terminology). Because it rewards months of steady reading, it is the section most punished by a "start after Prelims" plan.

Nothing truly drops; every Prelims skill survives into Mains in a heavier form. What appears is the real story: awareness and descriptive writing are the two areas a Prelims-only plan never touches, and both need runway measured in months, not weeks.
How to split your IBPS PO preparation across the stages

Run banking awareness as a daily thread from day one. Twenty minutes of current affairs and banking reading compounds; it cannot be crammed.
Prepare Prelims sections at Mains depth where they overlap. Arithmetic learned properly serves DI later; puzzles practised hard serve the tougher Mains reasoning.
Start descriptive writing early and small. One essay or letter a week from the beginning beats ten in the final fortnight.
Reserve the window between Prelims and Mains for the step-up, not the start. Heavier DI sets, longer puzzles, computer aptitude revision, and awareness consolidation belong there.
The common failure is sequencing by exam date: everything on Prelims first, Mains "later". The awareness section alone makes that plan expensive.
