Correct answer: C

Concept. Inclusive education begins from the premise that variation among learners — in readiness, pace, language, attention and processing — is the normal condition of a classroom, not an exception to be removed. Its governing principle is therefore “one common goal, many routes”: the curricular objective stays the same for every child, while the teacher deliberately varies the way that objective is reached. A practice that applies one uniform yardstick to a diverse group tends to widen the very gap that inclusion is meant to close.

Application. The class described here contains students with a range of learning difficulties, so the teacher needs a method that can absorb that range without lowering the shared objective. Differentiated instruction does this through four planning levers:

  • Content — the same idea is offered through simplified text, audio, visuals or concrete material.

  • Process — scaffolded steps, extra time, guided practice, peer or small-group support.

  • Product — mastery may be shown orally, through a demonstration, a poster or a written test.

  • Learning environment — flexible grouping, seating and quiet work areas.

Cross-check and contrast. Ask of each approach: does it change the teaching, or only the measurement or the behaviour?

  • Competitive grading is norm-referenced — it ranks pupils against one another and reports relative standing, leaving untouched the way a struggling learner is actually taught.

  • Strict discipline governs conduct. Orderly behaviour is a precondition for teaching, but rules and consequences do not change how content is presented, practised or assessed.

  • Standardized testing deliberately holds the instrument and the conditions constant for everyone. That is precisely what makes scores comparable, and equally why it cannot adapt instruction to individual learning needs.

Result. Only differentiated instruction acts on the teaching itself; the other three act on measurement or on behaviour. This is also the position taken by NCF 2005 and by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which require adapted pedagogy and reasonable accommodation rather than uniform treatment. Hence the most effective approach is differentiated instruction.
