Correct answer: C

Interconnection networks that link processors and memory modules in a multiprocessor system are classified by how many switching stages a data item passes through on its way to its destination. A single-stage network is built from just one stage of switching elements between the inputs and the outputs.

Because a single pass through that one stage cannot connect every input directly to every desired output, a data item is routed back through that very same stage as many times as needed until it arrives at its destination. This repeated-pass behaviour is called recirculation, so a single-stage interconnection network is also known as a recirculating network.

  • one sided network - this phrase is not part of the standard classification vocabulary for interconnection networks; network types are named by stage count (single-stage, multistage) or by connection style (crossbar), never by "sidedness".

  • two sided network - likewise, no accepted interconnection-network taxonomy uses a two-sided category.

  • pipeline network - this term describes a network organised around a pipelined sequence of processing stages for throughput, a different organising idea from naming a network by how many times data recirculates through a single switching stage.

So the single-stage network is also called a recirculating network.
