Objective work can fill the week, leaving serious typing until mains is close. Organise the baseline, scoring and rewrite cycle with the SBI PO Mains Descriptive Communication Practice Plan, then practise the email, situation, report and precis drills under a clock. For the wider exam, use SBI PO Exam Preparation.
SBI PO Mains descriptive test: establish the applicable task mix first
SBI advertisement CRPD/PO/2025-26/04, dated 23 June 2025, specified a typed Communication Skills descriptive test of 50 marks in 30 minutes. Its 4 September 2025 corrigendum required an email, compulsory with one of two options; a situation analysis, compulsory with one of two options; and either report or precis writing. That rule applied to one cycle only. Check SBI Careers: Current Openings for the applicable notice and corrigenda before copying this mock format. See SBI PO Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2026: All Stages Decoded for the wider stage map.
For an untouched 30-minute baseline, use four email facts: a 10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. interruption delayed 18 customers. Then answer the 4:10 p.m. outage with 14 waiting, including 2 elderly pension customers. Finish with the Ward 7 report or fraud precis. Save it for week 6.
SBI PO descriptive practice scorecard: measure communication, not length alone
Score each response out of 25: task fulfilment 5, organisation 5, reasoning and factual control 5, language 5, checking 5. Example: 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 14/25. It is self-scoring, not an SBI cutoff.
Date and task | Score | Missed instruction | Grammar errors | Unsupported claim | Next rewrite |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Week 1 email | 14/25 | No requested workaround | 7 | Guessed the outage cause | Within 24 hours |
Log defects, then rewrite from the prompt without a model answer. Reading five ideal responses without repairing yours is not five attempts.
SBI PO Mains task-drill schedule: budget 4 hours 45 minutes honestly
Use 45 minutes Monday to Friday and 60 on Saturday: 5 x 45 + 60 = 225 + 60 = 285 minutes = 4 hours 45 minutes. Sunday is for recovery only.
Week | Required output |
|---|---|
1 | Baseline 30-minute mock, 4 untimed drills, 2 rewrites |
2 | 6 email drills, 3 rewrites, 1 mini mock |
3 | 6 situation analyses, 3 rewrites, 1 mini mock |
4 | 3 reports, 3 precis exercises, 3 rewrites, 1 mock |
5 | 4 mixed mini mocks, 4 targeted rewrites |
6 | 4 full 30-minute mocks, 2 final rewrites |
Move one missed drill to Sunday. If two days are missed, keep Saturday's mock, drop one new prompt and repair the lowest score. Never double sessions after tiring objective study.

SBI PO email writing: turn a service problem into a precise action request
Use this practice prompt: "You are the operations officer of Lake Road Branch. A system interruption lasted from 10:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and delayed 18 customers. Email the regional operations desk, report the impact, ask for the incident reference and request a temporary workaround if the fault recurs." These are invented practice facts, not a real incident.
In 2 minutes extract sender, recipient, purpose, the 45-minute interruption, 18 delayed customers and two requests. Type for 7 and check subject, tone, names and numbers for 2. Sequence: specific subject, purpose in sentence one, verified impact, two actions, courteous close.
A long apology may omit the incident reference and workaround. Rewrite with the four verified facts, without a guessed cause, emotion or ornamental opening.
SBI PO situation analysis: make a defensible branch decision under pressure
Use this practice scenario: "At 4:10 p.m., the branch network fails. 14 customers are waiting, including 2 elderly customers seeking pension withdrawals. The system gives no recovery time. You are the branch officer in charge. Explain your immediate response." Its numbers are invented practice data.
Map five steps: verify and escalate; inform all 14 without promising recovery; preserve queue order and identify policy-covered needs; ask the 2 elderly customers about an authorised alternative; record actions and set an update checkpoint. Never invent policy, bypass authentication or guarantee service.
Use 2 minutes for stakeholders and constraints, 6 to type, and 2 to test fairness, safety and feasibility. "Send everyone home" lacks escalation, communication, prioritisation and follow-up.
SBI PO report and precis practice: control facts, hierarchy and compression
Report brief: a financial-literacy camp at Ward 7 Community Hall on 12 June drew 84 people. Staff completed 31 digital-banking demonstrations, 9 people sought follow-up help, and printed handouts kept the session running during a 12-minute projector failure. Use: heading and context, objective, verified activity and outcomes, disruption and response, recommendation. Cap practice at 130 words: 2 minutes planning, 8 typing, 2 editing. Add no praise, costs or facts.
Now compress this 94-word practice source:
Fraudsters often create urgency by claiming that a bank account will be blocked unless the customer shares an OTP or clicks a link. Banks do not ask customers to disclose passwords, PINs or OTPs through calls or messages. Customers should verify alerts through the official banking app or branch contact, avoid links from unknown senders, and report suspicious activity immediately. Regular awareness messages help, but repetition alone is not enough. Banks should combine clear warnings with simple reporting channels so that a worried customer can pause, verify and act before money leaves the account.
An exact 31-word precis is: "Urgent messages often enable banking fraud. Customers should never disclose credentials, must verify alerts through official channels, and should report suspicious activity quickly. Banks need clear warnings and simple reporting routes."
It keeps the problem, customer action and bank response, while removing examples and repetition. Bank PO English: A Section Strategy supports reading accuracy, not typed practice.
SBI PO timed mocks: compress the feedback loop before exam day
For a cited-cycle mock, use 3 minutes to read and select, 8 for email, 8 for situation analysis, 8 for report or precis, and 3 to check: 3 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 3 = 30. Adapt it if SBI changes the mix or timing.
Sample progress: baseline, 14/25 with 7 grammar errors and 2 missed instructions; week 3, 18/25 with 3 grammar errors and 1 missed instruction; week 6, 21/25 with 1 grammar error and 0 missed instructions. These are examples, not promises or official benchmarks.
Review instruction coverage, copied names, times and counts, then sentence boundaries and spelling. Controlled writing beats unsupported length.
SBI PO Mains descriptive test: the short version and next step
Verify the current official notice.
Take one untouched baseline.
Practise 4 hours 45 minutes in a standard week.
Rewrite low-scoring work within 24 hours.
Move from single tasks to mixed mocks.
Compare the week 6 draft with the saved baseline using the same 25-point scorecard.
Repeat the email, situation and either report or precis exercise with new surface facts but the same decision structure. Templates are scaffolding, not compulsory sentences.
The SBI PO Mains Preparation Course places descriptive writing beside other mains sections, practice and progress tracking. If communication alone is the priority, repeat the drill-and-rewrite loop until instruction coverage and factual control improve under the 30-minute mock.
