Most aspirants meet the Computer Knowledge module twice: once in the syllabus, where it looks harmless, and once in the result, where "qualifying" turns out to mean fail-able. It is the one part of Tier 2 that almost nobody teaches as a proper syllabus, so candidates who would never skip a maths chapter give it half a Sunday. SSC CGL Tier 2 Computer Knowledge: where the module sits and why it fails people
The Computer Knowledge module sits inside Tier 2 Paper 1, alongside the sections that decide your merit. In the recent pattern it has run as a 20-question module carrying 60 marks, qualifying in nature. Treat every specific there, the question count, marks, qualifying threshold, timing and negative marking, as something to confirm in the current notification at ssc.gov.in; SSC defines them per cycle.
Qualifying does not mean optional. If you miss the module's bar, your performance in the rest of the paper stops mattering. That is the failure mode every cycle: candidates who prepared quant and English for a year and treated computers as general awareness with a keyboard.

Per-topic depth guide: how deep each area actually goes
Memory and computer fundamentals: one-step recall, confusable pairs
Questions here are single-step recall, and the failure mode is confusing similar pairs. Be precise on these: RAM is volatile working memory, ROM is non-volatile and holds firmware. Cache sits between the CPU and main memory to hide the speed gap. Hard disks and SSDs are secondary storage, and registers are the fastest memory in the machine. Learn the size ladder cold: KB, MB, GB, TB.
Operating systems: Windows-user depth, not GATE depth
Know what an operating system does: it manages processes, memory, files and devices. You do not need scheduling algorithms or deadlock theory here; this is not GATE. What gets asked is user-level: file extensions, what a driver does, the desktop and taskbar, and the difference between system software and application software.
MS Office: the detail machine of the module
MS Office questions cite exact details, which is why this area punishes bluffing. An Excel formula begins with the = sign. The default Excel extension is .xlsx, Word's is .docx, PowerPoint's is .pptx. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+Z and their friends get asked directly. Word has mail merge, Excel has cell references and basic functions like SUM and AVERAGE, and PowerPoint starts a slideshow with F5.
The only reliable preparation is opening the applications and doing the operations once. Fifteen minutes inside Excel beats an hour of reading about Excel.
Internet, networking and security: map every term to its function
Networking questions are vocabulary with a job description. A router connects networks; a modem converts signals between your line and your network. LAN is local, WAN spans cities. HTTP moves web pages and HTTPS is its encrypted form. An IP address identifies a device; a URL locates a resource. In email, CC is visible to every recipient and BCC is hidden.
Security is the same skill applied to threats. A virus attaches itself to files, a worm self-replicates across networks without a host, a trojan disguises itself as legitimate software, and phishing is a social attack that tricks you into handing over credentials. A firewall filters network traffic. Most security questions are answered by knowing exactly these distinctions.
How to clear the qualifying Computer Knowledge section: a two-week plan
The module rewards consistency, not brilliance. Thirty to forty-five minutes a day for two weeks, run alongside your main Tier 2 preparation, is enough:
Days 1 to 2: fundamentals and memory. Make the comparison lists (RAM/ROM, primary/secondary, hardware/software) and learn them as pairs.
Days 3 to 4: operating system basics. Revise with your own computer in front of you; every concept is on the screen.
Days 5 to 8: MS Office with the apps open. One day each for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, then one day for shortcuts and extensions across all three.
Days 9 to 10: networking and security. Build the term-to-function table yourself; writing it once is most of the memorisation.
Days 11 to 14: timed MCQ sets daily. Practise 20-question sets against the clock and review every wrong option.
