Read the following passage and answer Questions 32 and 33.

Gandhism represents a synthesis of political and spiritual elements. This is the distinctive feature of this philosophy. Almost all the ideologies prevalent in the world today have become confined to the political sphere. Having lost their connection with the soul, their influence now extends only to the external world. Purifying the soul through purity of mind and devotion to God is the foremost requirement of Gandhism. By doing so, selfless understanding develops, and a person becomes ready to serve the people in the true sense. Communalism has no place in Gandhism. Gandhi sacrificed his life to resolve this very problem.

Correct answer: C

Concept: In passage-based comprehension questions, the answer is drawn directly from the source passage — locate the sentence stating the subject's central/opening characteristic for the key word asked (here, "foundation"), not a later detail such as a process or precondition.

Application: The very first sentence of the passage states: "Gandhism represents a synthesis of political and spiritual elements. This is the distinctive feature of this philosophy." This sentence directly defines the fundamental identity/foundation of Gandhism. The later sentence, "Purifying the soul through purity of mind and devotion to God is the foremost requirement of Gandhism," describes a subsequent condition/process, not the fundamental basis.

Contrast:

  • Public service and spirituality — public service is presented as an outcome of the development of selfless understanding, not the original foundation, and this option also drops the political aspect entirely.

  • Devotion to God and purity of mind — this is the "foremost requirement" (a precondition) for purifying the soul, not the philosophy's fundamental basis.

  • Political spirituality and communalism — the passage explicitly states communalism has no place in Gandhism, so it cannot be its foundation.

Hence, per the passage's opening sentence, "political and spiritual elements" is the foundation of Gandhism.
