Deloitte NLA Test Pattern: The Four Sections and a 14-Day Preparation Plan

Deloitte's NLA runs on four sections: English, general aptitude, technical skills and coding. Three worked aptitude examples, Versant-style drills and a fourteen-day plan.

Deloitte's National Level Assessment, the NLA, asks for two very different kinds of readiness in one sitting: reasoning and technical recall against a clock, and clear spoken English on a machine-scored round. Repeating only aptitude mocks leaves the speaking round exposed. Drilling only spoken English hides slow reasoning. Prepare each skill as its own block, then join them under timed conditions.

Deloitte NLA test pattern: the four assessment sections

The Deloitte NLA Preparation Course is built around the four section families the assessment uses: English language skills, general aptitude, technical skills and coding. Each scores a different behaviour, so each needs its own practice.

General aptitude splits into quantitative ability and reasoning ability. English language skills is the communication round, delivered as short spoken and listening tasks rather than a written paper. Technical skills is computer-science fundamentals answered as MCQs, across operating systems, DBMS, computer networks, data structures, software engineering, cloud computing and cyber security. Coding is a separate hands-on section. A candidate who prepares aptitude alone therefore walks in with half the assessment unrehearsed.

Question counts, per-section timing and the order of the rounds change from drive to drive, so take those from your own invitation email rather than from an old campus post. For comparison, the TCS NQT exam structure shows why one company's test template should not be imposed on another.

Turn that email into a one-page blueprint: every named section in the order it appears, with the timing it states. Divide stated time by stated question count to get a working pace, or set your own where the email is silent. Run every mock in that order and at that pace.

The English round: how to prepare for Versant-style speaking tasks

A machine-scored spoken round of this kind presents short tasks one at a time, each heard or read once and answered immediately in your own voice. The score reflects how clearly and accurately you speak, not how clever your content sounds.

It rewards intelligibility, listening accuracy, steady pace and relevant responses. An artificial accent is not the goal. Clear words, complete sentences and calm recovery after a mistake matter more.

Five drills cover the task shapes:

  • Read aloud: record a short news or technical paragraph. Replay it for dropped endings, rushed phrases and unclear pauses.

  • Listen and repeat: hear one sentence once, note its meaning mentally, then reproduce it without adding ideas.

  • Listen and answer: practise short questions where the response must be immediate and grammatical.

  • Retell: hear a small passage, identify who, what, why and result, then retell it in order.

  • Speak from a prompt: take a familiar topic, plan three points in a few seconds and speak with an opening, body and close.

Use a quiet room, a stable microphone position and, where the rules permit it, the headset you will actually use. Run the device check before the assessment, not during it. If a word goes wrong, keep the sentence moving: long silence damages fluency more than one corrected word.

General aptitude: three question styles, worked through

Drive labels vary, but three skill families do most of the work on this side.

Numerical interpretation

A quantity starts at 800 units, increases by 15 percent, then the result decreases by 10 percent. What is the final quantity?

First increase: 800 x 15/100 = 120, so the new quantity is 800 + 120 = 920 units.

Then reduce: 920 x 10/100 = 92, so the final quantity is 920 - 92 = 828 units.

Check it independently with multipliers: 800 x 1.15 x 0.90 = 800 x 1.035 = 828 units. The two percentage changes do not cancel because they act on different bases.

Logical pattern recognition

Find the next term: 3, 8, 15, 24, 35, ?

The differences are 5, 7, 9, 11. They rise by 2, so the next difference is 13. Therefore, 35 + 13 = 48.

Check through the term rule n² + 2n. At n = 5, 25 + 10 = 35; at n = 6, 36 + 12 = 48. Both methods agree.

Verbal accuracy

Correct this sentence: “Neither of the reports were complete.”

In standard test grammar, neither is treated as singular here, so the corrected sentence is “Neither of the reports was complete.” Read the complete subject before choosing a verb. The nearer plural noun reports is the distractor.

For each family, keep an error log with the missed cue, the wrong assumption and the corrected method. Scores improve when the same error stops recurring.

Technical skills and coding: what to revise

The technical MCQ block draws on the computer-science core you already studied: operating systems, DBMS, computer networks, data structures, software engineering, cloud computing and cyber security. Revise definitions and the standard comparisons first, because an MCQ rewards recall speed far more than derivation.

Coding is judged on a working solution, not an elegant one. Write complete, compiling programs in one language you know well, using array, string, hash-map and basic recursion problems as the base set. Dry-run each solution on one edge case, an empty input or a single element, before you submit it.

After the assessment: interview stages and four STAR stories

Candidates who clear the assessment move on to interview stages. Whether those are labelled technical, managerial or HR depends on the role and the drive, so prepare the substance rather than a route.

Build four STAR stories: a difficult problem, teamwork, conflict or disagreement, and a mistake followed by correction. In each story, keep Situation and Task brief, make Action specific to what you did, and end with a verifiable Result. Review your resume line by line because any project, tool or achievement can become the next question.

A two-week Deloitte NLA plan

  • Day 1: read the drive email, build the blueprint and take a short diagnostic across all four sections.

  • Day 2: revise percentages, ratios and arithmetic accuracy.

  • Day 3: practise sequences, arrangements and condition-based reasoning.

  • Day 4: work on grammar, reading and short verbal questions.

  • Day 5: record reading aloud and listen-and-repeat practice.

  • Day 6: practise retelling and prompt-based speaking.

  • Day 7: revise operating systems and DBMS as rapid MCQ sets.

  • Day 8: revise computer networks and data structures the same way.

  • Day 9: write three coding problems end to end, then dry-run each on one edge case.

  • Day 10: take one mixed timed set and classify every error.

  • Day 11: repair the weakest numerical and logical topics from the error log.

  • Day 12: revise software engineering, cloud and cyber security, then prepare four STAR stories.

  • Day 13: run a full simulation in your blueprint order, then check the device and test environment.

  • Day 14: do light recall, one short speaking warm-up and stop heavy practice early.
