Search results often mix older IBPS SO patterns with the revised CRP SPL-XVI structure. You can then practise the wrong test mix or mock timing. Here is the clean pattern, its scoring consequences and a preparation split.
Every pattern, scoring and selection figure below comes from the IBPS CRP SPL-XVI detailed notification issued on 1 July 2026. Treat this as an official snapshot and recheck your own-cycle notice.
1. IBPS SO IT Officer selection stages at a glance
Stage | What it does |
|---|---|
Preliminary Examination | Qualify in all four tests to be shortlisted for mains |
Main Examination | Meet test minimums and the required Professional Knowledge score for the interview shortlist |
Interview | Qualify separately |
Provisional allotment | Uses the combined mains and interview score |
Prelims marks do not enter final merit. Mains and interview have 80:20 relative weightage. Compare this route with other specialist exams in the Banking & Insurance category.
2. Preliminary exam pattern: four separately timed tests
Test | Questions | Marks | Medium | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
English Language | 25 | 25 | English | 20 minutes |
Reasoning | 25 | 25 | English and Hindi | 20 minutes |
Quantitative Aptitude | 25 | 25 | English and Hindi | 20 minutes |
Professional Knowledge | 25 | 50 | English and Hindi | 20 minutes |
Total | 100 | 125 | 80 minutes |
English, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude questions carry 1 mark each; Professional Knowledge questions carry 2. Each test has its own 20-minute window, so treat time as non-transferable unless the current information handout says otherwise. You must qualify in every test at cutoffs decided by IBPS. Do not guess one. Use IBPS SO IT Prelims for stage-specific preparation.
3. Main exam pattern: qualifying tests and Professional Knowledge merit
Objective test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
English Language | 30 | 30 | 25 minutes |
Reasoning | 40 | 40 | 35 minutes |
Quantitative Aptitude | 30 | 30 | 25 minutes |
Professional Knowledge | 50 | 100 | 40 minutes |
Objective total | 150 | 200 | 125 minutes |
The separate English Descriptive Paper has 2 questions, 25 marks and 30 minutes. Thus, mains spans 225 marks and 155 minutes. Wrong-answer penalties apply only to objective tests.
All tests except Professional Knowledge are qualifying; Professional Knowledge drives merit. Its pacing is tight: 40 x 60 = 2,400 seconds, then 2,400 / 50 = 48 seconds per question on average. Use the Professional Knowledge topic map, then the IBPS SO IT Mains course.
4. Negative marking: a fully worked prelims score
A wrong objective answer loses one fourth of its assigned marks; a blank loses nothing. Thus, wrong 1-mark and 2-mark answers cost 0.25 and 0.50 respectively.
Test | Correct, wrong, blank | Calculation | Corrected score |
|---|---|---|---|
English | 18, 4, 3 | 18 x 1 - 4 x 0.25 | 17.00 |
Reasoning | 17, 5, 3 | 17 x 1 - 5 x 0.25 | 15.75 |
Quantitative Aptitude | 16, 6, 3 | 16 x 1 - 6 x 0.25 | 14.50 |
Professional Knowledge | 18, 4, 3 | 18 x 2 - 4 x 0.50 | 34.00 |
Counts reconcile to 69 correct + 19 wrong + 12 blank = 100. Correct-answer marks are 18 + 17 + 16 + 36 = 87.00; penalties are 1 + 1.25 + 1.50 + 2 = 5.75. The illustrative score is 87.00 - 5.75 = 81.25/125.
This is not a predicted cutoff or final reported score. Across multiple sessions, corrected scores are normalized by the equi-percentile method and calculated to two decimal places.

5. Interview and the 80:20 final-score weight
The interview carries 100 marks. Its minimum qualifying mark is at least 40%, or 35% for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates. Mains and interview are weighted 80:20.
Suppose an already processed main merit score is 72 on a 100-point comparison scale and the interview score is 68/100:
Main contribution: 72 x 0.80 = 57.60
Interview contribution: 68 x 0.20 = 13.60
Weighted illustration: 57.60 + 13.60 = 71.20/100
This illustrates only the ratio, not normalization, cutoffs or an actual result. Professional Knowledge drives main merit, but you must also qualify the interview. Prepare with these IBPS SO IT Officer interview questions.
6. Turn the pattern into a weekly preparation split
For a 12-hour pre-prelims week, assign 4 hours to Professional Knowledge, 2 to Reasoning, 1.5 to Quantitative Aptitude, 1 to English, 80 minutes to a full mock, 40 minutes to review, 1 hour to descriptive English and 30 minutes to an error log. Total: 12 hours. Professional Knowledge gets priority because it carries 50 of 125 prelims marks and later drives merit.
After prelims, assign 7 hours to Professional Knowledge, 1.5 to Reasoning, 1 to Quantitative Aptitude, 30 minutes to objective English, 1 hour to descriptive English and 1 hour to mixed review. Total: 12 hours. Qualifying sections remain active without displacing the merit test.
If you miss a 2-hour block, do not create a 4-hour block tomorrow. Keep the next timed test and review, then move the topic to its next matching slot.
7. What to verify before relying on any pattern table
Before starting mocks, check:
Your own-cycle detailed notification
Any corrigendum
Your call letter
The information handout
Section timings and medium
Current penalty, cutoff and document rules
IBPS may communicate structural changes through its website. In short, CRP SPL-XVI has four timed prelims tests, a larger main exam where Professional Knowledge drives merit, then an interview weighted with mains at 80:20. Use the Prelims or Mains course linked above for your stage, after confirming the latest notice.
