The TCS National Qualifier Test, the NQT, is one of the widest entry points into an IT career in India. One score is used by TCS for its own hiring and is accepted by other companies recruiting through TCS iON. It is also tiered: the same NQT feeds TCS's Ninja, Digital and Prime tracks, and the higher two are decided by the advanced aptitude sets and the coding round, not by foundation aptitude alone. TCS NQT structure: the sections you prepare for
The NQT is a timed, sectional online test, and its content divides into three layers. Our TCS Preparation Live Course is organised along the same lines:
Foundation abilities: Numerical Ability, Verbal Ability and Reasoning Ability. The core aptitude every candidate needs, whichever track you target.
Advanced abilities: Advanced Quantitative Ability and Advanced Reasoning Ability, the harder tier of the same two skills. This is the layer the Digital and Prime tracks lean on, and the one that foundation-only preparation never touches.
Programming abilities: Programming Logic and a hands-on Coding section, for candidates targeting developer roles.
Each section is timed on its own, so you cannot borrow time from an easy section to rescue a hard one. Speed inside a section therefore matters as much as overall accuracy.
Ninja, Digital and Prime: the track you are preparing for
The NQT is one test with more than one destination. TCS recruits from it into a base track, Ninja, and into higher tracks, Digital and Prime, and the preparation depth differs. The base track is cleared on solid foundation aptitude with basic programming. The higher tracks are won on the advanced aptitude sets and on writing working code against test cases under a clock, which is why our TCS NQT test series mocks the three tracks separately rather than running one generic paper.

The foundation three are shared with almost every company aptitude test in the country, so that work transfers well beyond TCS. The advanced pair and the two programming sections are where the NQT stops behaving like a generic aptitude paper, and they reward genuine practice over memorised theory.
Numerical, Verbal and Reasoning: the foundation
These three sections are pure speed-and-accuracy work. The concepts are school-level, but the pressure comes from the clock, so the aspirants who struggle are usually the ones who understood the topics but never drilled them under time. Build a steady daily habit of timed sets rather than long untimed study; a topic you can solve slowly is not yet a topic you have cleared. The honest trap here is over-preparing the section you enjoy and neglecting another. Because each section is separately timed, a strong Numerical score cannot rescue a weak Verbal one. Spread the effort across all three, and add the advanced sets on top of that base rather than in place of it.
Programming Logic and Coding: where developer roles are decided
Programming Logic tests whether you can reason about data structures, basic complexity and pseudocode output, and the Coding section asks you to produce working code that passes test cases. Preparation here is writing and running code until the common patterns are automatic.
Practise in one language you are fully comfortable with, and rehearse against a test-case format similar to the real interface, so exam day is familiar rather than a surprise. How to split your TCS NQT preparation
A practical division of effort, on an eight-week runway of roughly 15 hours a week (trim proportionally if you have less):
Foundation abilities, a steady daily block. One timed hour, six days a week, rotating Numerical, Verbal and Reasoning so none is neglected. Accuracy first for the opening three weeks, then push speed. If Digital or Prime is the target, move part of that hour onto the advanced sets from week four.
Programming Logic and Coding, the largest share for a developer role. About 1.5 hours of hands-on coding a day from week one, because this is the skill that improves the slowest, plus regular practice in a realistic test interface.
Full-length timed mocks in the final weeks. From week five onward, one complete, sectionally-timed attempt every week, with the next day kept for reviewing every error. Nothing else exposes your weak section as honestly. On a day the plan slips, drop a foundation block rather than the coding block or the weekly mock.
A common sequencing error is leaving Coding until the end because it feels hardest. It is the section that improves most slowly, so it needs the longest runway. Start it early and keep it warm.
